Mason Technology

Learning how others retain knowledge.

An account previously published by IRDG, republished here as a record of how a member used the network at the time. Roles and programme names are those in the original account.

The challenge

  • Create a knowledge bank that would bring experience and skills held in people's heads into one shared resource.
  • Headcount had grown significantly over several years, and the company saw a risk in knowledge that lived with individuals.
  • The company did not see itself as an IT specialist and had limited knowledge of the options.

How IRDG was involved

  • The question was shared with IRDG members through Members Question Time, in the expectation that other companies had already solved the problem.
  • IRDG presented the responses to the company in a report.
  • The account notes that the responses came from organisations far larger than the company's own family operation.

What the account reports

  • The company was trialling a solution it says it would not otherwise have found, and hoped to implement it.
  • The account credits the willingness of people across member organisations to give their time and insight.
  • The account reports a trial, not a completed rollout, and does not say which approach or tool was chosen.

IRDG services used

We were blown away by the volume and quantity of responses in the report presented to us.
