CBE

Bringing lean product development into software delivery.

An account previously published by IRDG, republished here as a record of how a member used the network at the time. Roles and programme names are those in the original account.

The challenge

  • CBE, a point-of-sale supplier in Ireland and the UK with growing business in Europe, delivers a large range of projects and wanted to deliver them more efficiently.
  • The company was looking for tools that would add value to its software development processes.

How IRDG was involved

  • The company's lean product development (LPD) journey began with an IRDG workshop, delivered at the time by Ron Mascitelli.
  • It then ran an in-house LPD programme through IRDG, supported by Enterprise Ireland's LeanStart initiative, focused on its product development function.
  • The programme covered selecting the right projects, failing fast, mitigating risks, visual workflows, value stream mapping and productivity.

What the account reports

  • Employees bought into the process, and the account reports increased communication and knowledge-sharing through show-and-tells.
  • The company reports a dramatic improvement in the quantity and efficiency of rollouts and installations in the period before the account. No figures are given.
  • Its advice to others: train Lean Champions to keep leadership in-house, and visit companies already using LPD before starting.

IRDG services used

A key thing we've learned is that while you can get by on your own processes, you can't really upscale without implementing lean to bring business efficiencies.
