Capability · Innovation Diagnostic
See what is helping innovation move — and what is getting in the way.
A facilitated diagnostic for IRDG member companies across strategy, process, people, portfolio and culture. It is designed to build a shared capability profile and a short list of proposed priorities.
What it is
A mirror, not a medal.
The diagnostic combines a structured questionnaire with a facilitated review involving the people who lead and enable innovation. It is designed to surface strengths, identify friction and agree where focused action would create most value. It is not an audit, certification or comparison with other member companies.
How it works
Three steps from evidence to action.
Scope
Agree the question the team needs to answer, who should contribute, the format, timing and any cost.
Prepare
Complete a short questionnaire and invite input from leadership, R&D and the functions innovation touches.
Review and act
Work through the findings in a facilitated session, agree the priorities and identify the most relevant next support.
What your team takes away
A shared view and a practical place to start.
A shared picture of current capability
Evidence from the people who lead, deliver and enable innovation.
The constraints worth addressing first
A clearer view of where momentum is being lost and why.
A prioritised action plan
A short set of actions and routes into relevant training, mentoring, funding guidance or peer learning.

How it runs
A facilitated conversation, not an automated score.
The diagnostic is a structured discussion with the people who actually run the work. What comes out of it is a shared view of where a company is strong, where it is thin, and which of those gaps is worth doing something about first.
Nothing about a member's position is published, and IRDG does not rank member companies against one another.
Example profile
What a capability profile looks like
Note. Illustrative example only — not a client result, national benchmark, certification score or comparison with another organisation. Values use a 1–5 scale solely to demonstrate the format.

| Category | Value | Full label / context |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy | 3.8 | |

A real profile is built with your team in the facilitated session and belongs to you.
Availability and data
Designed for member teams, scoped around the decision.
The diagnostic is available to IRDG member companies, subject to capacity. Before work begins, we confirm who should participate, whether the work is online or in-company, how findings will be shared, the timing and any cost.
Wider context
Put the discussion in a wider industry context.
Ireland's Innovation Index gives a national view of the pressures and priorities facing innovation-active firms. It can help frame questions for your team; the diagnostic itself is based on evidence from your organisation and is not scored against the Index.
Next step
Scope the question before you run the diagnostic.
Tell us, at a high level, what you want to understand and who should be involved. We'll confirm whether the diagnostic is a fit, along with the format, timing and any cost.
